Bangkokƒ??s international airport, known as Suvarnabhumi International Airport, is one of the most vibrant airports in Asia, serving millions of travelers each year. It is located in Samut Prakan province about 25km east of Bangkok. This airport, designed by Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn Architects, has the world's tallest control tower (132.2 m) and the world's third biggest single-building airport terminal (563,000 m?ý).

Suvarnabhumi international airport has one main terminal organized into seven separate levels, with seven connected concourses for international and domestic flights. There is also a separate Public Transportation Center (PTC) building, which is around 10 minutes from the main terminal.

Prayer Facilities

Muslims who come to Thailand will really appreciate that two prayer rooms are provided for Muslim travelers in the transit area of Suvarnabhumi Airport. One is located in the departure hall at the linking area between international passengers terminal 1 and 2 and the other one is in the departure hall of the domestic terminal.

There is also a Muslim Prayer Room in the Public Are of the Airport. Toilets and ablution facilities are also provided in these rooms. The signs to the prayer rooms are easily noticeable and signage and directions to the prayer rooms are very visible. Itƒ??s advisable for the travelers to pray in the airport, as there are no mosques in close proximity to the airport.

Jumu'ah salaath is also conducted in the Muslim pareyr room in the public area.

Halal Food

There are few points in the Airport selling Halal Food for travellers, before and after immigration, most prominent is the K-express, in Concourse F, after immigration on floor 4, and also Before immigration at level 3, selling burgers and Kebab, as well as many Thai dishes at affordable prices from 35 Baht to 70 Baht.

There are also many traditional Thai veggie and seafood delights that are sure to satisfy oneƒ??s taste buds without violating dietary restrictions. Be sure to check the contents of the meals with waitresses before ordering however, as even vegetarian food may contain animal fats or pork.

Transport

Getting to the city center and back is inexpensive and not too much of an issue. There are a number of transport options available at the airport. Public taxis can be hired from level 2 (Arrivals). Travelers also have the option of taking a complimentary airport shuttle bus to the Transport Center taxi stand. Journey to the Bangkok city center costs around B300 to B400. In addition, there is an airport surcharge of B50 and the toll tax on the superhighway is B50.

Limousine service from Airport Associate Co is also available at about B650 to B850 plus B50 for toll charges. The journey can take anything from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the traffic.

The Airport Bus Service offers air-conditioned buses every 30 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok hotels. The pick-up spot for buses is next to the inner curb on level 2 (Arrivals), while the drop-off spot is near the inner curb on level 4 (Departures).

Public buses also run from the airport and leave every 15 to 20 minutes. Non-air-conditioned buses charge around B5 but they do not allow heavy or bulky luggage. Air-conditioned buses available at the main road, beside the airport, cost around B15. Many hotels offer their own shuttle bus services.

There is a Train Station located opposite the Terminals a walkway bridge connects it. The journey to Bangkok via Bangkok Airport Express takes about 30 minutes and the fare is B100. Regular trains are also available for Bangkok and the price ranges from B5 for a local train and B15 for an express. The Train Station in Bangkok is not close to the Hotels in the Bangkok city center.

Shopping

There are many shops at the airport featuring duty free goods, handicraft and traditional Thai products, designer goods, jewelry, clothing, books, newspapers, flowers and gift items. These are available on levels 2, 3 and 4 of the terminal building. Duty free shops are available on level 4 (departures level).

Amenities

There are now 2 commercial banks operating at the airport, which are Thai Military Bank Public Co. Ltd, situated at the northern section of international terminal 1, and Bangkok Bank Public Co Ltd, situated on the 2nd floor at the northern section of international terminal 2.

The airport also has numerous ATM machines from major banks in many places around the terminal. Money Changers Currency exchange counters are available in both arrival and departure halls and lounges of international terminals. Besides, currency exchange booths are also installed at various locations throughout the airport. They are open 24 hours and the rates offered by them do not vary a great deal from those offered in Bangkok.

There are information counters in Departures of International Terminals 1 and 2 and just outside the luggage pick-up area on the arrival level. Thailand Tourism desks are situated at the arrivals of each terminal.

A medical center is available for sick travelers on the first floor of the north end of the international passenger terminal. Two other medical rooms are located at the international passenger terminal 2 and the domestic passenger terminal.

Lost Baggage counters are available in both the arrival and departure hall of international terminals 1 and 2 as well as the domestic terminal.

There is a wide range of services available in the terminal building, including Traditional Thai massage and luxury spa rooms, slumber rooms with full-size plane beds, a laundry, high-tech visual and video entertainment rooms, shower rooms, extravagant seating spots, baby changing rooms and built-in check-in facilities. Public telephones are also available on all levels.
