Description

Dambulla, a large town in the Matale district is located in the central province of Sri Lanka. Its situation; 148 kilometres north east of Sri lanka’s capital – Colombo, and 72 kilometres north of Kandy, makes the city a major junction between two important cities in the country. Which is why, the city is the center of vegetable distribution to the rest of the country. Dambulla was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and it is the entrance to the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka. The city is also in close proximity to Sigiriya which is a place of historical interest. Muslim visitors may find it difficult to locate Muslim friendly-facilities in Dambulla.

Major attractions of the city include the largest and the best preserved cave temples in the country and the Dambulla International Stadium, which is famous because it was built in just 167 days. Popular among tourists as a heritage tourism destination, this city has much to offer its visitors. Its central location makes it the ideal place to use as a gateway to cities like Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradapura. Visitors could start off with visits to the Dambulla Rock Cave Temples, which is its most popular attraction. A visit to the Ironwood Forest and the Rose Quartz Mountain should also be on every visitor’s itinerary as it is said to be the largest rose quartz mountain range in South Asia.

Other activities that visitors could enjoy in the area include hot air ballooning and bird watching. Guests are picked up early in the morning and taken to an open field where the hot air balloon is waiting for their arrival. The balloon then takes guests on a romantic journey over the picturesque country side, and offers them the opportunity to enjoy and experience a Sri Lankan sunrise.

A visit to the Dambulla Produce Market will be an interesting, yet unique thing to do. This whole sale market, located south of the city center, offers visitors a fascinating look at the diverse array of produce that is grown in the country. Visitors tired after a full day of activities can relax and enjoy spa facilities in the city as most of the hotels in the area offer this facility. A relaxing foot massage or a head massage will be a great way to end the day.
