Steeped in history, Quebec City is one of the most splendid cities in not only Canada but the entire North America. The Old Town of Quebec City is the main attraction for visitors. The winding cobbled stone streets with sidewalk cafes and shops instantly impress the visitors. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the area is divided into two areas, the Haute Ville or the Upper Town and the Basse Ville or the Lower Town.
The Chateau Frontenac in the Haute Ville is of special mention. This is the main icon and also the most photographed building in the city. The Musée national des Beaux-arts du Québec is a wonderful art museum that preserves art work from several periods. The Basse Ville is home to the Place-Royale and the Musée de la civilization, which are both excellent places to visit. In the modern city the Parc du Bois-de-Coulonge is the residence of the previous lieutenant-governors from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Quebec City also offers some good shopping. The Basse Ville in particular is rigged with numerous shops selling leather goods and handcrafted items. The Marché du Vieux-Port is a Farmer’s Market offering local items at cheap prices. There are also some good shopping malls in the city such as Place Laurier, Place Ste-Foy, Place de la Citéand Galeries de la Capitale.
Quebec City is served by the Jean Lesage International Airport, which is located about 20 minutes from the downtown area of the city. There is no public transport or facility of airport shuttle available at the airport. Visitors can however hire taxis which charge about $34.25 for a one-way trip to the Old Town. There is a public bus that runs from the airport to the city but only a few times in a day and costs around $3.25 per ticket for a one-way trip.
