The town was a summer retreat for the royal families of Portugal. 

The National Palace is located in the heart of Sintra and is one of the oldest palaces in the country. Up the hills is located the Pena Palace and the remnants of the Moorish Castle. Sintra offers numerous hiking trails that give visitors an opportunity to explore the wilderness. Some other palaces to see in Sintra are Quinta da Regaleira, Royal Palace, Monserrate Palace, etc. The Toy Museum in Sintra is also a good place to visit especially when visiting the town with children. 

There are some good shopping streets and markets in Sintra where visitors can shop for ceramics, art and craft items. The area is also known for cork products and leather products. The best places to shop in Sintra include Sintra Bazaar, Sao Pedro market, Praca de Republica, etc.

The nearest airport to Sintra is in Lisbon. The airport is about 29 Km from Sintra and can be reached easily. From Lisbon visitors can take trains, buses, taxis and private cars. A taxi ride from Lisbon Airport to Sintra takes about 1 to 1.5 hours and costs 45-55 Euros. Trains are available regularly from Lisbon and leave every 20 minutes.
