Located along the banks of the Mtkvari River, the capital of Georgia Tbilisi is the largest city in the country. Tbilisi is also the political, cultural, and economic hub of Georgia and is said to be established in the 5th century. The city is placed in the foothills of the Trialeti Mountains and has served as the capital for several centuries. Tbilisi has a long history and its past can be visited through the numerous monuments that are dotted around the city. The present architecture of Tbilisi is a blend of medieval and classical architecture. A walk around Old Tbilisi is recommended.

The ruins of the Narikala Fortress are located on a hilltop from where visitors can get amazing views of the city. Close to the Narikala Fortress is the Botanic Garden, which features a good collection of flora and also a picturesque waterfall. Tbilisi is surrounded by lots of scenic beauty; Turtle Lake and Lake Lisi are located on the outskirts of Tbilisi and make great places to visit. There are a number of museums in Tbilisi that give visitors a peek into the history, culture, and art of the area. Some good museums to visit are the Janashia Museum, G. Chitaia Ethnographical Open-Air Museum, and the Museum of Art. Freedom Square is one of the main squares in the city.

Tbilisi is also a good shopping destination. There is a flea market organized every Saturday along the banks of the river and is a great place to buy antiques and jewelry. The Tbilisi Mall is also a good place for shopping. The area of Old Tbilisi also is lined with numerous shops.

Nearby Airports

Tbilisi is served by the Tbilisi International Airport, which is located about 17km from the city center. There is a regular bus service that runs from the airport to the city every half an hour. Taxis are also available at the airport and cost around 20-30 Lari for a ride to the city center. There is also a train service that connects the airport to the main train station. A one-way ticket by train costs 0.50 GEL and the journey takes about half an hour.
