Description

Tihany; located in Hungary, is a village in the northern shore of Lake Balaton perched on top of a Peninsula which is known as the Tihany peninsula. It is a settlement with a considerable past, where traditions are still kept alive and values of the past are carefully protected. The whole peninsula is considered to be a historical district. The Tihany peninsula almost divides the Lake Balaton into two and is surrounded by water. It is famously known to be the pearl of the region as well as Europe, and is popular among tourists visiting Hungary. Tihany is centered on a Baroque Benedictine abbey built in 1754, on top of an old structure dating back to 1055. From the church ground visitors are able to get one of the best views of the lake and enjoy its ever changing kaleidoscope of colors. Muslim travelers visiting Tihany will find it difficult to locate Muslim-friendly facilities.

Tihany, the jewel in the middle of the Hungarian sea has a great number of attractions - not just ones that are natural, but historical ones as well. The surface of this volcanic peninsula is covered by limestone geysers. This geyser field formed millions of years ago stretches between the Sarkad Forest and the inner lake and due to the thermal activity in the area, about 50 geyser cones dot the area, the most famous one is the Golden House Geyser Cone. Those visiting Tihany can also enjoy a walk on the peninsula as it is part of the Balaton Uplands National Park. Visitors can stroll up onto a ridge that is known to offer breathtaking views of the lake as well as the village of Tihany. The hillside slopes are covered with vineyards, wildflowers and the forest hides ancient church ruins.

Being largely a tourist town, Tihany’s location also makes it easy for travelers to go on day trips to Baltonfured; situated north of Tihany. The city offers a lovely lakeside promenade as well as some historical buildings. Travelers can also visit the Kali Basin in the south, which is where tourists will be able enjoy long, picturesque walks along the dolomite and limestone ridges, around bogs which are home to rare plants and endemic flora, and then walk through seven small villages where traditional life still thrives. Due to its unique climate and its two lakes without an outlet, a number of rare plants and animals can be found here.

Tihany has its share of souvenir shops for those interested in doing some shopping, and these shops usually sell high quality local ceramics, linens and woodwork, unlike in the south shore where Chinese imports are sold.
