Description

The town of Torremolinos was once a well-known fishing village that later developed into a popular tourist destination following the expansion of tourism in the 1950s. Located around 10 kilometres away from Malaga, along its western coast, the town stretches across a land area of over 20 square kilometres and is home to a population of over 60,000 inhabitants. The population comprises a large number of British expatriates and the town itself is particularly popular amongst British tourists and young travellers for the entertainment options that are available in the town. Numbers of tourist flock to the town, especially during the summer season, which is the peak period for tourism.

The history of Torremolinos dates back as far to the Neolithic Age - 150,000 years ago - when the first traces of human life were discovered by archaeologists. The name Torremolinos is derived from two words - "Torre" which means "tower" and "Molino" which means mill. Historians believe that large numbers of water mills covered the town area and hence its name. The remains of one such water mill - Molino de Inca - can still be witnessed in the city.

Torremolinos offers several tourist attractions and places-of-interest including several museums, monuments and prominent landmarks. The most popular attractions in the town are La Carihuela (the fishermen's quarters), La Carihuela beach, the crocodile park, the Torre de Pimentel and Casa de los Navaja. Activities such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, water skiing and boat trips are also popular in the town.
