Unawatuna is a popular yet serene destination located just 5 Km from Galle. Unawatuna is actually a fishing village with a beautiful stretch of beach that attracts the attention of travellers. The waters around the beach are excellent for enjoying different types of water-sports. The Unawatuna Beach is hemmed by palm trees creating a comfortable and beautiful ambiance for guests to relax and have fun. Adventure lovers can indulge in scuba diving, snorkelling and swimming. Boat rides are also available at the Unawatuna Beach.
Around 3Km from Unawatuna is another picturesque beach, the Jungle Beach. The waters around Jungle Beach provide visitors with excellent opportunities of snorkelling. About 3 Km south of Unawatuna is the area of Habaraduwa where travellers can visit the Turtle Hatchery. There is also a Mangrove Sanctuary located within easy reach of Unawatuna. It is a wonderful place to visit and enjoy the local flora and fauna. The Japanese Peace Pagoda is located around 2Km from Unawatuna and offers amazing views of the surroundings.
There are a few kiosks and stalls around the Unawatuna Beach that sell local items including trinkets made from shells, local handicrafts and other essential items. Fresh fruits and vegetables can also be bought at the local market in Unawatuna. For a detailed shopping experience travellers can visit Galle.
The nearest airport to Unawatuna is the Bandaranayaka International Airport in Katunayaka about 150 Km away. A journey from the airport to Unawatuna can take around 2.5-3 hours depending on the route chosen. Travellers can take bus or train from Colombo to reach Unawatuna. The Mataratrain from Colombo to Galle takes almost 3 hours and costs Rs 220 per person. Buses are also available from Colombo to Galle and cost around Rs 230 per person. From Galle visitors can take a bus (Rs 15) toUnawatuna or a tuk-tuk (Rs 400).
