It is also one of the fastest growing municipal areas in South Africa and is one of the eight tourism nodes in the Johannesburg area. There are several things that visitors can do and see in and around Midrand. In fact, Midrand shares numerous attractions with nearby Johannesburg. Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary in Midrand is a must-visit when with kids. The sanctuary is considered a boutique zoo and is home to a fabulous selection of birds and animals. Human and animal interaction is encouraged here, therefore giving visitors the unique opportunity to get up-close and personal with the animals. The Cango Caves, located about 29 kilometres from Oudtshoorn, in the Swartberg Mountains, is a must-visit wonder of the Klein Karoo. This cultural and natural landmark consists of hidden chambers in which are breathtaking limestone formations. The Congo Caves are also said to be South Africa's oldest tourist attraction. Located about 3 kilometres outside of Oudtshoorn is the Cango Wildlife Ranch, which is home to over 47 different species of animals and reptiles. Visitors also get the changes to interact with abandoned baby cheetahs. It is a great way for visitors to learn more about hunted and endangered species while having fun. To see more of the spectacular surrounding area, visitors must also take a hot air balloon ride over Oudtshoorn.
