Mount Lavinia for long has been attracting visitors to Sri Lanka. The town is known for its popular beaches that span over several miles. The town is named after the house of Sir Thomas Maitland. He served as the Governor of Ceylon between 1805 and 1811. On his arrival a party was arranged where he met the local dancer Lovina. Sir Thomas was smitten by her beauty but it was not considered conventional for a British officer to fall for a local dancer. Local legend states that Lovina was snuck into his mansion through a secret tunnel dug from the well in her fatherâ€™s house to mansion of the governor.
The historical governorâ€™s house is located on a small cliff on the beach of Mount Lavinia. Today the mansion serves as the Mount Lavinia Hotel. There is a statue of Lady Lavinia standing in the middle of a water fountain in the premises of the Mount Lavinia Hotel. The town also boasts in being host to one of the most prestigious educational institutes of Sri Lanka, St. Thomasâ€™ College. The beaches around town of Mount Lavinia are safe for bathing and enjoying other water sports.
There are several kiosks around the beaches and all across the town where visitors can find a variety of local items. Those who wish to enjoy an elaborate shopping experience can visit Colombo.
The closest airport to Mount Lavinia is the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake. From the airport it can take around 1-2 hours to reach Mount Lavinia. The town can be accessed from the airport via Colombo. Buses are available from the airport to the Colombo Fort. From the fort bus depot visitors can take a bus, taxi or tuk-tuk further to Mount Lavinia. A bus ride from the airport to Colombo Fort costs around Rs 40. Trains are also available from Colombo Fort station to Mount Lavinia Station.
