1) Get Plenty of Rest

Easier said than done, right? But rest is essential, especially for impending air travel when sick. Doctors recommend a good 7-8 hours of rest, so if you have something that has to be done before you leave, don’t hesitate to ask for help. And if you fall sick when you’re already on vacation, take a day off. Enjoy the amenities at your hotel and give yourself some time to recuperate. This way, you’ll feel much better the next day, instead of feeling terrible for the rest of the trip.

2) Hydration is Key

Drinking plenty of fluids is very important. If you are going to be flying when sick, make sure to carry a water bottle with you. It might make you want to urinate more often, but that’s just how it is. Also, make sure you get plenty of Vitamin C. Orange juice and warm soups are just perfect for getting you through your sickness while traveling.

3) Try Postponing

If you feel like you’re too sick to fly, consider postponing the trip if possible. If it’s a business trip, try calling in sick. It might be a long shot, but it might be worth it. Family vacations might be more difficult to postpone, but if you have the option to do so, go for it.

4) Take Precautions

If you sneeze too much a couple days before your planned trip, take medication! Flying with a cold is not exactly a party. And be extra careful if you have kids who you’re going to be traveling with, flying with a feverous child will be very hard. Make sure to get them any pending flu shots, make them wash their hands often and take other precautionary measures.

5) Pack Everything You Need

Be prepared! While we struggle to shove 6 pairs of shoes into our luggage, because, “what if/just in case”, most of the time we tend to forget to pack our medical essentials. It’s not as easy trying to buy medicine in a foreign country. Before you leave, prepare a good starter kit consisting of over-the-counter medication for common ailments like fever, headache, stomach issues, bandages, etc.

6) Guided Tours are Lifesavers

Well, you’re on vacation and you’re sick. You’ve got only a few days left and if you don’t get out there and explore, you’ll miss your chance. But you just don’t have the energy to make plans. I mean, finding interesting places to see, figuring out how to get there, where to eat… it sounds exhausting! That’s why a good travel tip for when you’re sick is to book a guided tour! Let the guides do all the work while you sit back and enjoy; they’ll take of everything: attractions, travel, food, etc.
