In the 1,425 days of the siege, the longest siege in modern warfare three times as long as the siege of Stalingrad – 500 000 shells were fired at the city. The ring of the siege spread 200 km around the city. The tunnel was the only way in and out of the city for the population of Sarajevo and for supplies. The tunnel itself is a wonder of creation as it was constructed, planned and dug in secret within a period of three months with workers working round the clock and receiving as payment, a pack of cigarettes (a rare commodity in war times) for digging from both ends and removing 2800 square meters of soil and finally connecting both ends of the tunnel on June 30th 1993. This tour focuses on the resistance and spirit of the people of the city and their fight for freedom.

Witness the beauty and history of Herzegovina starting from the Bradina tunnel which is the divide between Bosnia & Herzegovina. On your descent from Bradina you will see Konjic, a city that has had settlements built by the Illyrians as far back as 4000 years ago, and Jablaničko Lake, an artificially formed lake on the Neretva River in the wide canyon of the Neretva following Konjic.

The next city and the heart of Herzegovina is Mostar and the fifth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city hosts one of the country’s most famous landmarks – The Old Bridge – a UNESCO heritage site. The name of the city comes from the word for “bridge keepers” – Mostari who guarded the bridge of the city. The next gem of Herzegovina is Blagaj which sits on the spring of the Buna River, which has a historical tekke, or Dervish monastery at its spring. We will also visit Počitelj, home to the Počitelj Fort built in the 15th century and a historic Ottoman mosque in the heart of the city, which regularly hosts art colonies and is tribute to what an inspiration Herzegovina, Neretva and Počitelj are for generations of artists from around the world.
