Overview
The Shugakuin Imperial Villa was constructed during the mid-seventeenth century in the north-eastern area of Kyoto as a luxury retreat for the Imperial Family. The gardens of the villa are considered to be an example of impeccable Japanese gardening and are thus regarded as one of the country's most valued large-scale cultural treasures. The villa grounds are split into 3 garden areas and stretches across an area of 133 acres, showcasing the magnificence and beauty of its natural splendour, as well as the unique characteristics of early Japanese design and architecture. A special tea pavilion located at the very peak of the garden offers glorious views of the surrounding landscapes and emanates an aura of absolute peace and relaxation.
