Overview
Built in the early seventeenth century by Emperor Gomizu, the Sento Imperial Palace is another palace complex in Kyoto and it functioned as the palace of residence for retired emperors. Though the original palace building suffered heavy damage from a fire in the mid 1800s and was not rebuilt, the surrounding garden area and teahouses that spread across an area of 22 acres offer a plethora of breathtaking sights with its delightful winding walkways, mossy hills, ponds, cherry trees and tiny islands. The two teahouses - Seika-tei and Yushin-tei - are located within the garden, showcasing the unique characteristics of imperial architecture and design.
