Overview

The largest fort in the country, the Fort Cornwall is named after Charles Cornwallis - the Governor-General of Bengal in the 18th century - and was built to protect the city from pirates. It is fortified by walls that measure up to 10 feet in height and features a number of prison cells, chapels and a harbour light which was used to communicate with incoming ships back in the day. Stores of ammunition and old bronze cannons can also be witnessed inside. Presently the fort is a popular tourist attraction and offers visitors a snack bar, information centre, separate history gallery as well as a number of souvenir boutiques.

Prayer Facilities

Ample area is available around the Fort area to make use of during prayer times. Locals could assist in finding a convenient private spot.

Halal Food

A café is available within the fort's premises, but it is advisable to verify with the staff as to whether the food being served is Halal. Plenty of Halal restaurant options are available outside, in the near vicinity of the town.
