Overview

Also known as the Blue Mosque, the Sultanahmet Mosque is a historic landmark in Istanbul and was constructed during the years of 1609-1616 by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire - Ahmed I. Its name - Blue Mosque - is derived from the blue tiles in the interior of the mosque which features design elements from the Ottoman Empire. The building structure comprises a main dome, 6 minarets and 8 other smaller domes that were all designed by the architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa with the intention of giving the mosque a grand and majestic appearance. Though it is one of the main tourist attractions in the country, the Sultanahmet Mosque still serves as an active mosque and daily prayers are held five times a day.
