Overview
The city of Fethiye is home to several stone sarcophagii - an ancient burial method - with carvings that reflect Lycian style elements dating back to the 4th century BC. Unlike the Greeks who preferred to bury their dead in separate or isolate areas, the Lycians buried their dead amongst the living. Due to this, a number of sarcophagii and burial tombs have remained scattered throughout the town in their original locations, in the midst of surrounding structures and modern buildings. Particularly well preserved sarcophagii in Fethiye include one located in the town governor's office area at the main street as well as another on the street centre, heading uphill towards the cave tombs.

Plenty of private area is also available in the vicinity of the Lycian sarcophagii to make use of during prayer times.
