Overview
Afkule is an ancient monastery located in Kayaköy, close to Fethiye. With its name translating to Tower of Hope, Afkule was built by Ayios Elefterios - a monk from 11th century - who wanted to dedicate it to worshipping God. The monastery was partly built into stone and constructed on an area of around 10 square metres. The ruins of the structure feature separate carved rooms as well as a stable which is believed to have housed goats. The site itself offers spectacular views of the open Mediterranean Sea and the curve of the earth's horizon in the distance. The area is also home to several ruins which all have to be reached by trekking on foot, making it a must-visit spot for outdoor enthusiasts.
Prayer Facilities
Plenty of private space is available in the open area to make use of during prayer times. Travelling to a mosque might take a while, but it is also possible to visit the Kayaköy mosque which is located a short distance away.
Halal Food
The area of Kayaköy will offer a few spots where Halal food is available, but it is recommended that you bring along your own food during the trek. It is also important to bring plenty of water along since the trek to Afkule might take a few hours.
