Overview

The Open Air Museum of Göreme is a spectacular landmark featuring vast monastic complexes carved into a giant rock mass. The dwellings and underground towns that were once part of the area date back as far as the 4th century and presently, the structure is one of the finest examples of rock-hewn architecture. The area is located within a volcanic landscape that been sculpted by erosion naturally to result in the shape it is in today. The walls of the interiors are adorned by beautiful ancient frescoes painted in the 10th century and are admired for their preserved fresh appearance. The Göreme Open Air Museum is also just a few minutes away from the city centre of Goreme and is a must-visit spot for Muslim travellers to Göreme. The Göreme Open Air Museum was also one of the first sites in Turkey to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
