Overview

The Karanlık Kilis is a part of the Göreme Open-Air Museum and is one of the five ancient churches of the museum, having been carved out of rock. It is famed for its fascinating architectural elements and stunning artwork that adorn its interiors. It is also known as the Dark Church due to the dim lighting inside the building which originally had very few windows. A number of bright and colourful frescoes can be observed on the interiors portraying a number of different scenes from the bible. These frescoes date back to the Byzantine period in the 11th century and are considered to be amongst some of the best-preserved frescoes in the world. The entrance to the Karanlık Kilis itself is through a long and winding tunnel and charges an extra admission fee in order to enter.
