Overview

The prominent historical Red Tower in Alanya - more commonly known as the Kızıl Kule - is considered to be the symbol of the city. The origins of the building date back as early as 1226, when the tower was completed under the command of the Sultan Ala ad-Din Kay Qubadh I. Measuring over 100 feet in length and over 40 feet wide, the Red Tower is considered to be one of the best examples of well-preserved medieval military architecture and is one of the oldest Seljuk buildings in Alanya. The name of the Red Tower is derived from the colour of the red bricks used during construction and like many other buildings of its nature, it flies a Turkish flag which is visible at a distance. The Red Tower represents the city by appearing on the official Alanya city flag and interestingly has also appeared on Turkish Lira banknotes in the past. The Red Tower presently houses a museum and is open to the general public for sight-seeing.
