Overview
The Sea-Gypsy Village is a large community of sea gypsies living towards the south east corner of Koh Lanta. They are also known as Chao Leh which translates to "people of the sea" and were the first settlers on the island over 500 years ago. Travellers visiting the village may be able to purchase a few handmade jewellery and other unique goods to take back in memory of the visit. Boat making and fishing are common activities at the village and at late afternoon, the village men return from the sea with their catch. A visit to the village is a worth-while experience but it is advised that travellers respect the privacy of the gypsies and not take photographs of them.
Prayer Facilities
Plenty of private space will be available around the village area to make use of during prayer times. For Muslim travellers who wish to visit a mosque, several mosques are available around Ko Lantra.
Halal Food
Though Halal food at the sea gypsy village itself might not be available, finding Halal food in Ko Lanta will not be too difficult. However it is recommended that you enquire with restaurant owners about the availability of Halal food prior to dining. Plenty of vegetarian options and seafood will also be available.
