Overview
The National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwela is located not too far away from Mount Lavinia and can be reached in about a 20 minute drive from the city. The
zoo is the main zoo of the country and was opened to the public in 1936, making it one of Asia's oldest zoological gardens. It is home to around 3000 animals,
including over 350 species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles. The zoo also holds a few shows for visitors – elephant shows, educational programmes on
chimps and sea lion performances. On certain days visitors are also offered elephant rides, pony rides as well as the services of a souvenir shop. The aquarium
walk-through, reptile house and butterfly garden are some of its highlights.
