Overview

Hikkaduwa's moonstone mines are a popular attraction in the area and offer a fascinating glimpse into the process of filtering, cutting and polishing the precious stones and making them ready for sale. Known in Sri Lanka as chandrakanthi stones, moonstones take on beautiful whitish-blue shade and local villagers believe that those who wear moonstones will experience a brightness in their lives. These mines are found a short distance away from Mitiyagoda; to reach them, travellers will need to head towards Kahawa and then turn to Mititagoda and travel about 7 kilometres inland. Sign boards are clearly marked and finding your way should not be too difficult. Though entrance is free, once at the on-site shops, sellers will try to convince travellers to purchase some of the precious stones.
