Hikkaduwa Beaches

Overview

Hikkaduwa's beaches are often considered to be some of the best beaches in the world. Located in the district of Galle, the Hikkaduwa Beach is located about 98 kilometres towards the south of Colombo and is one of the most popular beaches of the country. It is famed for its coral sanctuary and its water sports and is an excellent beach to unwind and sample the distinct local culture of the area. The beautiful coral reef is home to an abundance of exotic marine life as well as families of sea turtles that visit the shore to nest. A visit to the Hikkaduwa Beach is a must for surfers, with it being a well-known surf destination amongst the international circuit. Diving is also a popular activity and offers a fantastic experience. Plenty of souvenir shops and stalls will be available around the beach area but purchasing corals is not recommended or encouraged.

Prayer Facilities

There are a few Halal restaurants in the area for Muslim travellers who require Halal food in Hikkaduwa. Most of the Halal restaurants in Hikkaduwa can be found along the Hikkaduwa - Galle Road. It is also possible to visit some of the more prominent and expensive restaurants at well-known hotels in the area such as the Chaaya Tranz Hikkaduwa which are capable of arranging Halal meals upon prior notice.

Must See

Plenty of private area is available around the beach area to make use of when travelling. Though there are no mosques in Hikkaduwa itself, Muslim travellers who wish to visit a mosque during prayer times may visit some of the mosques in Gintota – which is located about 12 kilometres away. Avalmale Mosque, Welipitimodara Mosque and Meeram Mosque are some of the mosques in Gintota that can be visited.
