Overview
Al-Masjid Al-Nabawi; often called the Prophet's Mosque situated in Medina is not only the second most important mosque in the world after Al-Haram in Mecca but is also the second mosque built in history. Built originally by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in 622 AD, the mosque has since then been through many transformations and expansions and is now one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world; with its ten minarets which were built in different eras. It includes the final resting place of the Prophet, as well as the two caliphs namely Abu Bakr and Umar. The Prophet's Mosque is the most visited pilgrimage site in Medina, as almost all pilgrims visiting Mecca on pilgrimage tend to visit Medina, especially in order to visit this mosque. The mosque is located in what traditionally was the center of Medina and it is surrounded by hotels and shops, making it very convenient for visitors.
Prayer Facilities
The mosque is a hundred times bigger than the original mosque built by the Prophet (PBUH) and is able to accommodate over half a million worshipers. Besides the main prayer hall on the first floor worshipers can use the roof, courtyard and the paved areas around the mosque during peak time. All pilgrims attempt to visit and pray in Ar- Rawdah however it is not always possible as the small area can accomadate only a few hundred at a time.
Halal Food
Halal food is available in abundance as all restaurants in Medina are Halal. Visitors can easily locate restaurants and fast food outlets in the area surrounding the mosque. As the hotels are all Muslim-friendly, guests will find it convenient to dine at the hotel they are staying at. As mentioned above there are hotels located around the mosque and most travelers visiting the city on pilgrimage, choose to stay close to the mosque and therefore will not have any problem locating Halal food.
Must See
- The most prominent feature of the mosque is the green dome, which rises high amongst the white domes. Also another must-see is the heart of the mosque
- known as Ar-Rawdahan Nabawiya. Within the new white marble mosque visitors will be able to see the old mosque.
