Richmond Castle

Overview

Richmond Castle is considered to one of Kalutara's most prominent landmarks. Having been built way back in 1869, the castle originally belonged to the village leader during that time and was later used as a circuit bungalow for officials during the British period. The country house is found in a massive fruit garden estate covering an area of over 42 acres, atop a hill beside the Kalutara-Palatota Road. The two storey building features 99 doors and 34 windows with intricately decorated glass panes. It also features a dance hall and bears much resemblance to an ancient English mansion, with its teak furnishings and design elements. The castle gardens boast a wide range of flowering plants and fruit trees and is an enchanting place to visit.

Prayer Facilities

Though designated prayer facilities at Richmond Castle will not be available for Muslim travellers, it is possible to request for a private area to make use of during prayer times. Muslim travellers who wish to visit a mosque may head towards some of the prominent mosques in Kalutara such as the Hill Street Mosque, Alawiyathul Naqshabandiya Mosque, Kalutara Bazar Mosque and the Kalutara Mosque.

Halal Food

Muslim travellers looking for Halal food near Richmond Castle can visit some of the many Halal restaurants in Kalutara. Kandoori Restaurant and Sathira Food Center in Mahamewunawa are two popular Halal restaurants and finding Halal food in the area will not prove to be difficult.
