Also known as simply the Auckland Museum, the Auckland War Memorial Museum is considered to be one of the most important and most recognised museums in New Zealand. Established way back in 1929, the Auckland War Memorial Museum showcases New Zealand's rich history with a focus on military history and the Auckland Region. The building itself is noted for its unique architecture and neo-classicist style and is considered to be amongst the finest Greco-Roman buildings in the world. Exhibits at the museum include a collection of Māori artefacts and treasures, as well as natural history specimens and a photography collection. Parts of the museum are dedicated to those who lost their lives during the first and second world wars and serve as a war memorial, with two 'Halls of Memory'. The museum has also been listed under New Zealand Historic Places Trust - Category I and a visit is recommended for travellers in Auckland.
