Established way back in 1882, the Canterbury Museum is a prominent attraction and landmark in the cultural precinct of Christchurch. The architecture of the Canterbury Museum itself is noteworthy for its Victorian Gothic style design, constructed by architect Benjamin Mountfort in 1870.
