Overview

Located about 30 minutes away from Hastings and Napier, Cape Kidnappers is a prominent headland found towards the south-east of Hawke Bay, along the east coast of New Zealand. The history of the craggy peninsula dates back to 1769 when it was named by Captain Cook after an incident where a local Māori attempted to kidnap a member of his crew. At present, the area is considered to be an Important Bird Area and is a breeding site for thousands of Australasian gannets. The Cape Kidnappers Gannet Reserve protects the nesting site and covers an area of over 13 hectares, including the Saddle and Black Reef gannet colonies which are both closed to public access. The the golf course at Cape Kidnappers is another highlight and can be visited by golf enthusiasts. A visit to Cape Kidnappers is recommended for travellers sight-seeing around the Hawke Bay area - particularly for nature enthusiasts.
