Overview
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a major tourist attraction located a few kilometres to the north-west of the small town of Te Kuiti. Formed out of Oligocene limestone, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves are known for their presence of thousands of tiny luminescent glow worms - native to New Zealand - that light up the cave walls with a beautiful soft blue glow. A boat ride through the cave will prove to be an unforgettable experience and will give visitors a fascinating look at the caves' 120 year old cultural and natural history. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves, together with the Ruakuri Cave, Aranui Cave and Gardner's Gut, form the Waitomo Cave complex which is reputed world-over for their displays of stalactites and stalagmites.
