Château d’If

Overview

Located on top of a limestone island, opposite the Marseille Harbor is the 16th century fortress known as Château d'If. Built on orders from Francis 1, the fortress was a prison for several centuries. Famously known as the setting for an Alexander Dumas novel, the fortress is visited by many. Tourists interested in exploring this popular attraction loaded with fascinating history can visit the island by a regular ferry service that is available throughout the day. The ferry ride is in fact an adventure by itself. Those visiting the island will be able to enjoy splendid views of the city of Marseille and the Frioul archipelago from the terrace of the fortress. The impressive fortress is a definite must-visit attraction when in Marseille and is a wonderful daytrip that is enjoyed by many.

Prayer Facilities

Muslim visitors requiring prayer facilities when in Marseille will be able to locate them quite easily as the city is known to have a number of masjids that are frequented by its residents and tourist alike. The city is home to a large Muslim population and Muslim visitors could ask the locals to direct them to the nearest prayer facility in Marseille when necessary. Those visiting Château d'If will have to get back from the island to find prayer facilities, or they may be able to find a quiet, empty area on the island to offer their prayers.

Halal Food

The city of Marseille is home to some good Halal restaurants serving a range of cuisines such as French, Thai, Middle Eastern, western and more, including a variety of Halal fast food. However, Muslim visitors should be aware that some of these restaurants may only have a partial Halal menu and may also serve alcohol.
