Overview

Located on the slopes of the hill of La Croix-Rousse, in the 1st arrondissement of Lyon, is one of several covered passageways - Passage Thiaffait. The Passage Thiaffait was built in the early 19th century and was once used to transport goods from top of the Croix-Rousse hill to the bottom, by Lyonnais silk-weavers. Lyon is home to quite a number of covered passageways, or traboules, but the Passage Thiaffait was recently restored, therefore making it a must-visit. The passageway now houses many shops, studios and workshops and is a hub for young designers. These design studios and workshops were named The Village des Createurs in 2000 and now support fashion, accessory and jewelry brands by up-and-coming designers. The Passage Thiaffait has also been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Prayer Facilities

While Muslim tourists will not be able to find a prayer room at the Passage Thiaffait, the city of Lyon is home to quite a few mosques, such as Grande mosquée de Lyon. Tourists can therefore ask the locals for directions to the closest mosque to the passageway, if needed.

Halal Food

Visitors to Passage Thiaffait will be able to find coffee shops and eateries that serve an array of French goodies. These establishments may however not serve Halal food. Because there are numerous Halal restaurants in the city, Muslim tourists will not find it much of a problem to locate Halal food in Lyon. They can also dine on local seafood and vegetarian dishes after making sure that the dishes do not contain any non-Halal items.

Must See
