Overview

Located in the heart of Dunedin, Otago Museum is one of the most prominent attractions in the city and attracts nearly 500,000 visitors annually. Established in 1868, the museum houses a vast collection of science specimens, ancient artefacts and other items-of-interest including a science centre housing a massive tropical butterfly environment. The natural science collection features over 40,000 species of marine invertebrates, 30,000 bird specimens and a spider collection from across the globe. The humanities section features an extensive collection of Māori taoka as well as works of art from Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia and Australia. Visitors will be able to see items ranging from ancient coins to Indian armour to Islamic ceramics and jewellery collections. The museum is worth a visit for travellers sight-seeing in Dunedin.

Prayer Facilities

Though designated prayer facilities at Otago Museum will be unavailable for Muslim travellers, it is possible to request for a private area to use during prayer times. Travellers can also visit some of the few mosques in Dunedin such as the Masjid Al Huda or the Dunedin Islamic Centre and the prayer room at the Otago University - Otago Muslim Student's Association which serve the local Muslim community of the area.
