Orokonui Ecosanctuary

Overview

Also known in Māori as Te Korowai o Mihiwaka, the Orokonui Ecosanctuary is a prominent ecological island wildlife reserve in New Zealand - located towards the north of central Dunedin. The ecosanctuary was established with the intention of restoring the surrounding ecosystem to its original form - before the introduction of farming and deforestation by humans. Visitors to the ecosanctuary will be able to see exotic and rare species of birds, reptiles and plants in their natural habitats. Numerous walking tracks are available and visitors may choose to opt for daily guided tours or self-guided walking. A cafe, shop and visitor centre are also available to ensure a fantastic visit. Nature lovers in particular will undoubtedly find a visit to the Orokonui Ecosanctuary to be an unforgettable experience.

Prayer Facilities

Though designated prayer facilities at Orokonui Ecosanctuary will be unavailable for Muslim travellers, plenty of open area will be available to use during prayer times. Travellers can also visit some of the few mosques in Dunedin such as the Masjid Al Huda or the Dunedin Islamic Centre and the prayer room at the Otago University - Otago Muslim Student's Association which serve the local Muslim community of the area.
