Overview

The Alhambra Palace is the majestic fortress complex of the Moorish monarchs of Granada, Spain. Its name - which is derived from al-qala'a al-hamra in Arabic - translates to "red or crimson castle" due to its sheer red palace walls built from sun-dried bricks of gravel and clay. Built back in the 9th century by the founder of the Naṣrid dynasty, Ibn al-Aḥmar, the site underwent many construction phases and was completed by Yusuf I and Muhammed V, Sultan of Granada, towards the end of the Muslim rule of Spain. Presently it one of the country's most prominent attractions and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rich history and cultural significance. The three main parts of the Alhambra Palace that are a must-see include the Royal Palace - the central palace complex, the Gardens of Generalife - the summer retreat for the Moorish kings, and the fortress of Alcazaba - Alhambra Palace's original fortress.
