Overview

Jaipur's most prominent landmark, the Hawa Mahal is an extraordinary and awe inspiring sight in the popular tourist destination famously known as the Pink City. This intricate, pink sandstone building, also known as the Palace of Winds due to its numerous windows, 953 to be exact, was built in 1799. The 5 storey building with its plethora of small windows allows wind to flow through the openings, giving the palace its name. Hawa Mahal is a great place for people watching and legend has it that the pyramid shaped facade was built so that the women of the royal household could view the daily activities in the lively and busy streets below, without being observed. Located in the heart of the city, at the edge of the City Palace complex, the palace offers visitors stunning views of Jantar Mantar, City Palace and the rest of the old city. The building also houses a small archaeological museum.

Prayer Facilities

Although Muslim visitors may not find prayer facilities at Hawa Mahal, they will be able to locate mosques in the city of Jaipur, as it is home to a number of masjids; the most prominent one being the Jama Masjid. Tourists could therefore ask the locals to direct them to a nearby mosque, when needed.

Halal Food

Locating Halal food in Jaipur is not a problem, as the city is known to have a number of fabulous Halal restaurants. Visitors could also dine on vegetarian dishes as the city of Jaipur, like most Indian cities, is home to numerous vegetarian restaurants serving some fantastic local cuisine. Those visiting Hawa Mahal could get directions from the locals to the most popular restaurants in the area.
