Overview
Chhatrapati Shivaj Terminus, formerly known as Victoria terminus is an imposing Victorian-gothic building in the heart of Mumbai and is one of the best examples of colonial architecture in Mumbai. Asia's busiest railway, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus or CST for short, still better known as VT, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. One of the most treasured historical landmarks in the city; the outstanding building resembles the St Pancras Station in London and is a must-visit when in Mumbai. The massive building is a fusion of influences and includes in its Victorian-gothic style of architecture many elements of traditional Indian palace architecture as well. The spectacular terminal was built over a period of 10 years, from 1878-1888 and is a remarkable structure combining two cultures, making it worthy of a visit when in the city.
Prayer Facilities
Muslim tourists requiring prayer facilities while at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus could ask the railway staff if the terminal has a prayer room, when needed, or they could get directions to a mosque nearby. Locating prayer facilities in Mumbai is not too difficult as the city is home to numerous mosques. Tourists can therefore always get the locals to direct them to a close by mosque at prayer times.
