Overview

The Charminar is a four century old monument and mosque that is a global icon of Hyderabad and is a symbolic representation of the city. Built in 1951 by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, this landmark is truly the pride of the city of Hyderabad and a visit to the city is incomplete without a visit to the monument. Built of granite and lime mortar, with stucco motifs, the Charminar is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. It is in fact said to be as much a signature of Hyderabad as the Eiffel Tower is of Paris or the Taj Mahal is of Agra. Visitors to the iconic structure will be met with views of incredible Indo-Islamic architectural splendor. The Charminar consists of four 48.7 metre high minarets, along with 45 prayer spaces and a mosque. The roof of the Charminar; which is accessed via a hundred and forty nine steps, offers panoramic views of the city, including views of popular attractions like Lad Bazaar and Golconda Fort.

Prayer Facilities

Muslim tourists visiting the Charminar will definitely be able to locate prayer facilities, since there is a small mosque and 45 prayer spaces within its premises. The iconic monument also overlooks the Makkah Masjid, which is one of the largest mosques in India. The city of Hyderabad is also home to quite a number of other masjids that are frequented by both, locals and tourists.

Halal Food

While visitors will not be able to find eating establishments inside the Charminar, the area surrounding the monument has plenty of places to dine at. There are restaurants and food carts to suit all budgets and tastes. Muslim visitors will definitely be able to locate a Halal restauarant or food cart nearby. Naans, dosas, kebabs, biryani and jalebis are some must-haves when in the area.
