Overview

A trip to Berlin is not complete without a visit to the iconic Berlin Wall. Built in 1961, by the German Democratic Republic, to separate East Berlin from the West, the Berlin Wall has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. Even though very little of the original wall remains, this famous Cold War relic is definitely worth a visit. A must-see is the East Side Gallery; a 1.3 kilometre long mural covered in over a hundred inspiring art works by commissioned artists. Located near the Bornholmer Straße S-Bahn station is the remaining section of the original Berlin Wall. This graffiti-free stretch has been preserved by the authorities and is another must-see. Tourists could also pay a visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial and the visitor center for more information about the Wall and for a look at how people lived on either side of the border. Also available for those interested in finding out more and tracking the path of the Wall that separated West Berlin from the East, is the Mauerguide, which is a PDA system with GPS tracking and audio/video presentations.

Prayer Facilities

Since Berlin is home to a sizeable population of Muslims, the city houses quite a number of mosques. It is said that over 70 mosques are found in Berlin. The Berlin Mosque or the Ahmadiyya Mosque Berlin was built in 1924 and is the oldest mosque in the country. Those looking for prayer facilities close to the Berlin Wall are advised to ask the locals for directions.

Halal Food

Muslims visiting the city of Berlin should be aware that there are quite a few Halal restaurants in the city. Tourists will come across numerous restaurants that serve Middle Eastern cuisine, as well as ones that serve Indian and Pakistani food, and more. Muslim visitors are sure to find a few Halal restaurants located close to the mosques in the city.
