Overview
A must-visit for any first-time D.C. visitor is the Washington Monument. Standing at over 550 feet, this landmark is one of the best-known obelisks on earth and was built in notice of George Washington's; the United State's first presidents, military achievements during the Revolutionary War. Built during the 19th century, the Washington Monument is probably the most prominent structure in Washington. To enjoy breathtaking 360 degree views of the city, visitors must make it a point to take one of the glass-encased elevators found here to the observation deck on top, which lasts about 70 seconds and is 500 feet above the ground. Just below that, at the 490 level, there is a small museum. To visit, tourists can either get same-day tickets for free at the ticket window, or they can make advance reservations by paying a small fee.
Prayer Facilities
Finding prayer facilities at the Washington Monument will not be possible. Muslim visitors can either find a clean and quiet place outdoors to offer their prayers, or they can visit one of the numerous mosques in Washington, such as the Islamic Center of Washington, Masjid Al-Hikma and the Idriss Mosque.
Halal Food
Food items are not available at the Washington Monument. The area around the monument should however be home to a plethora of great restaurants. Because of the sizeable amount of Muslims residing in Washington, Muslim tourists will definitely be able to find plenty of Halal restaurants to dine at. A lot of these restaurants are located close to the mosques and Islamic Centers found in the capital.
