Overview

A trip to the city of Nottingham is not complete without a visit to Nottingham Castle. Situated high on Castle Rock and commanding spectacular views over the city, Nottingham Castle is one of the most popular attractions in Nottingham and gets thousands of visitors each year. Nottingham Castle was not the original castle to be built on the site, the current structure that stands belonged to the Duke of Newcastle. The castle now houses two great museums and is known for featuring Nottingham-born sculptor James Woodford's bronze statues of Robin Hood and his merry men. The Sherwood Foresters Museum and the Nottingham Castle Museum both feature numerous fascinating exhibits and art works. Found beneath the castle is a labyrinth of manmade caves and tunnels, dating back to medieval times, which visitors can tour. Visitors will come across King David's legendary dungeon, secret passageways and the famous Mortimer's Hole. Those visiting Nottingham Castle must also make it a point to take a stroll through the attraction's Victorian inspired grounds and gardens which are spread across 6 acres. There is a medieval style playground here, as well as a covered picnic area.
