Overview

A must-visit landmark when in Marrakech is the Koutoubia Mosque. Located near the Djemaa el Fna, the Koutoubia Mosque, dating back to the 12th century, is the largest in Marrakech and is famously known for its magnificent minaret; the oldest of the three great Almohad minarets still existing in the world. Rising almost 70 metres, the minaret is visible for miles in every direction. Visitors will definitely be astounded at the sheer size of this renowned minaret that was highly influential in designing aspects of other famous minarets such as the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the La Giralda in Seville. The mosques name Koutoubia was derived from the word koutoub, which means books in Arabic, which is an appropriate name, since the mosque was surrounded by a book market in the past. Built of red sandstone, the sight of Koutoubia Mosque at dusk, amidst all the chaos of Djemaa el Fna is a spectacular site that should not be missed.

Prayer Facilities

Muslim tourists visiting the Koutoubia Mosque will not have trouble locating prayer facilities within the mosque as its prayer hall can accommodate up to 25000 worshippers during prayer time. The facilities of the Koutoubia Mosque are frequently used by locals as well as tourists in the area, to offer their five daily prayers, therefore those visiting this historic landmark to admire its stunning architecture, could use its prayer facilities when needed.

Halal Food

The Koutoubia Mosque does not house any food outlets within its premises; however Muslim tourists requiring Halal cuisine while at the famous mosque could find numerous food stalls in the nearby Djemaa el Fna. They will also find several local food stalls in the souks of medina. Tourists could enjoy popular Moroccan dishes while here, including tagines.
