Overview

A trip to Hanoi is not complete without visiting the world-famous Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. A tradition dating back as far as the 11th century, 'water puppetry' is a rare treat for visitors. This tradition stems from times when villagers would entertain themselves by standing in flooded rice paddy fields and performing with puppets. The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hanoi and is frequented by locals and tourists alike. The unique show is performed in a pool of water where a large rod is used to support the puppet under the water, with the puppeteers hiding behind a bamboo screen. A cultural highlight of Northern Vietnam, the Thang Long Water Puppet show takes the audience on an exciting journey of the tradition that first started in the Red River Delta. The performances are generally of folk tales and historical legends and usually last an hour, with about 17 short sketches.

Prayer Facilities

Finding prayer facilities at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre will not be possible. Muslim tourists will therefore have to make use of the facilities offered at Al-Noor Mosque, located on Hang Luoc Street in the old French Quarter of Hanoi city. Visitors can ask to be guided to this mosque when needed.

Halal Food

It is unclear if visitors to the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre will be able to find a food outlet within its premises. There are however a few Halal restaurants in the city that Muslim visitors could dine at. While in Hanoi, tourists will also come across plenty of street food stalls and carts. They must therefore make it a point to try out some of Vietnam's most popular dishes, as well as the numerous fresh fruits available here.
