Chania Old Town

Overview

A trip to the city of Chania is truly incomplete without a visit to its wonderful Old Town. Said to be one of the most beautiful towns in the Mediterranean, Chania's Old Town is quaint and mysterious and is an absolute must-visit. Established by the Venetians, the Old Town is also known as the "Venice of the East, as it transports visitors to beautiful Venice. Its small winding streets must be explored, and the numerous shops, hotels, restaurants and cafés found here must be discovered. Visitors will also come across narrow alleyways, courtyards and arches, along with houses and buildings of Ottoman and Venetian architecture, mosques and churches, and even the Old Venetian Harbor. Two squares that visitors must make it a point to visit are Sintrivani Square and Splanzia Square, both of which are popular amongst locals, and are therefore great for people watching. While in the Old Town, tourists will also be able to pick up a few unique Cretan souvenirs to take back home, and will also find some fantastic cafés serving authentic local cuisine.

Prayer Facilities

Because the city of Chania has a sizeable Muslim population, Muslim visitors will be able to locate a couple of mosques. Two well known mosques in Chania include the Masjed Qibaa and Masjid Al Rahma. Muslims visiting the Old Town can therefore ask to be guided to the closest mosque at prayer time.

Halal Food

As mentioned above, Chania's Old Town is home to a selection of great restaurants and cafés. Although there are no known Halal restaurants here, Muslim tourists are sure to find several vegetarian and seafood dining establishments. They will also find numerous food outlets near the Old Venetian Harbor, where they can have their meals while enjoying the fantastic view.
