Overview

Tourists to the city of Chania must make it a point to explore its stunning Old Venetian Harbor. Built between 1320 and 1356, by the Venetians, this Old Port is one of the city's top attractions. This lively spot offers so much to do and see, and is therefore popular amongst locals and tourists alike. Featuring Venetian architecture along with some Turkish structures, the Old Venetian Harbor is picturesque and most be explored. This priceless gem has beautiful historical memories as it once served Venetian military ships, and was one of the most significant commercial ports in the east Mediterranean. It is now however packed with a number of attractions such as the prominent Egyptian Lighthouse, the Firka Fortress and the Maritime Museum of Crete, as well as several restaurants and cafés, shops and hotels.

Prayer Facilities

While Muslims visiting the Old Venetian Harbor will not be able to find prayer facilities here, they will be able to locate a couple of mosques in the city of Chania. Masjed Qibaa and Masjid Al Rahma both serve the city's sizeable Muslim community. Muslim tourists can therefore ask locals to guide them to the nearest mosque when needed.

Halal Food

Although Muslims will be able to find some mosques in Chania, it will be more difficult to locate Halal restaurants, even thought there is a small population of Muslims in the city. When visiting the Old Venetian Harbor, Muslim tourists will therefore have to dine on suitable vegetarian and seafood dishes at the restaurants and cafés found here. They can also make inquiries regarding the availability of Halal food in the city, when at one of the mosques.
