Overview

Located 3 kilometres from the centre of Rhodes, on top of the hill of Ayios Stefanos, is a must-visit archaeological site when in the city; the imposing Acropolis of Rhodes. This site unlike other ancient acropoleis was not fortified. The Acropolis dates back to the Classical Greek period and consists of numerous monuments all of which are included in a large park known as Monte Smith, named after William Sidney Smith; English Napoleonic admiral. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, this archaeological park has been well preserved and is thus a top tourist attraction. Visitors will come across important monuments such as the Temple of Pythian Apollo, Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus, the Nymphaeums; defined simply as caves that were used for recreation and worship, Odeion, Stoa building, Artemision, the Gymnasium and the Stadium. Those visiting the historical attraction will not only be able to explore the ruins, they will also get the opportunity to enjoy beautiful views of the surroundings.

Prayer Facilities

Muslims visiting the Acropolis of Rhodes will not be able to find prayer facilities at the attraction. They can however make use of the facilities offered at the Mosque of Suleiman, which is located in the Old Town of Rhodes. Muslim visitors may also be able to locate a secluded place within the park to offer their prayers.

Halal Food

Although finding food outlets at the Acropolis of Rhodes will not be possible, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants in the city of Rhodes. Muslim tourists will however find it quite difficult to locate a Halal restaurant, as they are very rare. If unable to locate such an establishment, Muslim tourists could get more information regarding this at the local mosque, or they can dine on vegetarian and seafood dishes at local non-Halal restaurants.
