Overview

Located in the Medieval Town, at the end of the popular Street of the Knights, at the highest point in Rhodes, is the Palace of the Grand Master, which also serves as the Byzantine Museum. Built in the 14th century, where the Temple of the Sun God stood, by the Knights of St John, the palace suffered during the Turkish siege and was destroyed in 1856 by an explosion, and then rebuilt in 1940 by the Italians, according to the original drawings. This imposing structure is home to 158 rooms, 24 of which are open to visitors. Visitors will come across antique furniture, a rich collection of vases, carpets, sculptures and fine mosaic floors; which are a notable feature of the palace. Also found here are frescoes by well known artists and numerous statues from the Roman and Greek period. Apart from housing an interesting museum, the Grand Master's Palace also hosts major cultural events.

Prayer Facilities

While finding prayer facilities at the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes will not be possible, Muslim visitors will be able to find a mosque in the city. In the past, Rhodes was home to numerous mosques, many of which are not functioning at present. One mosque that however does function is the Mosque of Suleiman. Muslim tourists can therefore ask staff at the palace to guide them to this mosque at prayer times.

Halal Food

Although finding food outlets at the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes will not be possible, the Old Town area is known for being home to numerous cafés and restaurants. It is however unclear if Muslims will be able to locate any Halal restaurants here, even though Rhodes is home to a small Muslim population. Muslim tourists could get more information regarding this at the mosque, or they can dine on vegetarian and seafood dishes at local non-Halal restaurants.
