Overview

Housed in a restored 17th century Venetian mansion in Rethymno Town is the fascinating Historical and Folklore Museum. Aiming to preserve the history of Cretan tradition, this museum is the ideal attraction for tourists looking to familiarize themselves with the unique rural and urban life of the Cretan people. The museum is known to have over 5000 objects of traditional handicraft work and folklore art dating from the 17th century to the 20th century. Visitors will come across collections of everyday-life objects, including costumes, weapons, coins, lace, drawings, historic photographs, jewelry, documents, basket weaving, ceramics, pottery, metal work, maps and much more, spread across eight halls.

Prayer Facilities

As with any attraction in Rethymno Town, Muslim tourists will not be able to find prayer facilities at the Historical and Folklore Museum. There are a couple of mosques in Rethymno Town; these are however not in use. Muslim visitors will therefore have to return to their hotel rooms at prayer times.

Halal Food

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is not known to house a café. There are however numerous restaurants and cafés in the surrounding area. Muslim tourist will not find any that are Halal certified, but they are sure to find plenty that serve vegetarian and seafood dishes that do not consist of any non-Halal ingredients.
