Overview
Located on a rock-island just off Nafplio's small harbor, is the most photographed spot of Nafplio, the Castle of Bourtzi. This offshore Venetian castle was built in the 1400s, to protect the town from pirate raids and invasions. It is now one of Nafplio's prominent landmarks and is a popular, picturesque attraction. Visitors can stroll around the castle, explore its courtyards and many rooms and climb up to its terraces. Since the castle faces the city and also looks out toward the Argolic Gulf, it offers some of the most stunning views. Those visiting the island-fortress will be able to see Nafplio's Old Town, the Acronafplia Castle, the Fortress of Palamidi, the popular Arvanitia Promenade and numerous other major attractions.
Prayer Facilities
Although there are several mosques in Nafplio, which were used during Turkish rule, these mosques are not currently in use. Muslims visiting the Castle of Bourtzi may however be able to locate a clean and quiet area within the attraction to offer their prayers. If unable to, they will have to return to their hotel rooms at prayer times.
Halal Food
There are no food outlets within the Castle of Bourtzi. Visitors will have to go back to the town of Nafplio to find cafés and restaurants. Muslim tourists will have to dine on seafood and vegetarian dishes at local non-Halal restaurants, as there are no known Halal restaurants in town.
